The University of Pittsburgh is located in the city it takes its name from.
Established in 1787 the university moved locations a number of times before settling in what is now the cultural heart of the city, Oakland. It maintains a high profile thanks to a number of factors. The first, and most obvious, is the Cathedral of Learning, which towers over the rest of the buildings in the area being 163 metres tall (the tallest educational building in the western hemisphere). Secondly, it lead the way in developing the Polio vaccine.
Why would I come here? Both the University and the School of Information are very highly respected, and the BS curriculum seems to be very good, with a mix of theory and practical work. The only real negative would be the winters.
It is ranked very highly in both the US News and World Report (58) and the Academic Ranking of World Universities(52). As well as this, the School of Information & Library Studies (where I would be based) has an excellent reputation among its peer schools across the US, consistently ranked very highly year after year.
When it comes to accommodation and dining on campus, the university has a wide selection of choices. It's residence halls are a mix of traditional, suite, and apartment and they have a number of options for third and fourth year students which remain open over the semester breaks. There are also a wide range of dining choices as well, with a mix of cafes and dining halls (some of them open on the weekend).
For shopping there is a four block area immediately adjacent to the campus itself with a wide mix of shopping and dining options to choose from.
Outside the university there are lots of job opportunities for BSIS students, as there are many companies in the area who could be prospective employers. Google is just down the road, to name an example.
