University of WashingtonThe University of Washington is a university located in the city of Seattle in Washington State on the northern pacific coast of the continent. Compared with other university cities at the same latitude, its climate is milder with less snow thanks to the protective influence of the Pacific Ocean, Puget Sound, and Lake Washington. It is also protected from winter storms by the two mountain ranges that dominate the state.[1]
The university itself is the oldest on the west coast and has an excellent academic reputation as is shown in the US News rankings (41st nationally). It is also ranked very highly in the list of world universities (16th in 2008) as well as being a 'Public Ivy'[2].
Why would I consider going here? As well as being in a well respected university, the School of Information is one of the best in the country (4th in 2008). It was one of the first to offer a BSc in Informatics (my first choice for a degree) and it also offers a masters degree in Information Management.
When it comes to accommodation and dining on campus, the university has a wide selection of choices. It's residence halls are a mix of traditional, suite, and apartment and they have one undergraduate option that is open over the quarter breaks. There are also a wide range of dining choices as well, with a mix of cafes and dining halls (some of them open on the weekend).
There are two shopping areas close by, on either side of the campus, the 'U District' and 'University Village'.
The 'U District' consists of the main shopping street in the area (University Way) and a few outlying areas. It hosts the biggest farmer's market in the greater Seattle area.
'University Village' is the other shopping area to the NE of the main campus. It is an outdoor shopping centre with a supermarket attached.
Both these options would provide everything a student would need. If they wanted to go into Seattle, it would only be a short bus ride across Lake Union and past the Space Needle into the downtown core.
Outside the university, there are lots of job opportunities for Informatics students. Companies like Microsoft and Amazon have their headquarters in the area, while Google also has a major presence.
In a environment such as this, I would feel very comfortable indeed.
