Washington University in St Louis is a private university in the St Louis metropolitan area. Founded in 1853, it has developed into a well respected institution of higher learning within the United States with notable programs in business and engineering.
It is ranked very highly in both the US News and World Report (12th) and the Academic Ranking of World Universities(29th). This shows in the undergraduate admission rate of only 19%
Why would I go here? Firstly, the Engineering school (ranked 43rd in the US) has a good general CS program (my favoured course of study), and secondly, the gothic architecture the university is known for appeals to me. (It amazes me that around 90% of buildings are wheelchair accessible.)
When it comes to accommodation and dining on campus, the university organises its residence halls into residential colleges. There are 9 in total, and there is a good mix of both traditional dorm and suite style layouts. The big disadvantage to this place is then university and its housing close over the Winter break between semesters. There are also a wide range of dining choices as well, with a mix of cafes and dining halls (some of them open on the weekend).
For shopping there are many options available due to the proximity of the rail line. The closest is the loop, a ? block shopping area a short walk from the campus itself. For shopping further afield there is downtown St Louis in one direction and lots more shopping updates in the other direction.
Being in a large city, there would be lots of jobs available for CS students, with many top companies based there.
